New device designed to detect concussion symptoms using blink reflex: 4 details

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Charleston, S.C.-based Blinktbi made a device designed to detect impairments that might indicate brain trauma or concussions using an athlete's blink reflex, according to Sport Techie.

Here are four things to know:

1. The device administers a 20-second test that tracks eyelid movement and reflex time to assess neurological impairment.

2. Using high-speed cameras, the device measures the athlete's blink reflex after pumping five small puffs of air into his or her eyes.

3. The NFL currently uses amnesia, loss of consciousness and confusion as concussion symptoms, which prevent an athlete from returning to play.

4. The device has not been approved by the FDA.
