Atlanta-based Northside Hospital Sports Medicine Network welcomed its new Director of Nonoperative Sports Medicine Mark Sakr, DO, as well as concussion expert Dan Charek, PhD, who will provide services for the network's new concussion program.
Here are six things to know:
1. Dr. Sakr is board-certified in sports and family medicine. He specializes in sports-related injuries, including fractures, sprains, tendon injuries and concussions.
2. A team physician for USA Rugby, Dr. Sakr provides care for the USA men's national team and Olympic men's and women's teams.
3. After earning his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Glendale-based Midwestern University–Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Sakr completed his residency at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C., and a primary care sports medicine fellowship at Chapel Hill-based University of North Carolina Hospitals.
4. Dr. Charek is a neuropsychologist who specializes in the assessment and management of concussions in athletes and non-athletes.
5. With an expertise in comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations, Dr. Charek performs cognitive skill assessments, including memory, attention, reasoning and reaction time.
6. After earning his doctorate in clinical psychology at University of Toledo (Ohio), Dr. Charek completed his post-doctoral concussion testing and management fellowship at UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Clinic.
