UPMC honored orthopedic surgeon Freddie Fu, MD, by renaming the medical building within the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex to the UPMC Freddie Fu Sports Medicine Center.
Here are six insights:
1. Dr. Fu founded UPMC's sports medicine program in 1986 in Oakland, Pa. The program later moved to its current location in 2000.
2. For 32 years, Dr. Fu has served as the head team physician and orthopedic surgeon for University of Pittsburgh athletics.
3. Dr. Fu is chair of UPMC orthopedics, and he established the university's sports medicine fellowship program.
4. In July 2016, Dr. Fu was inducted into the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Hall of Fame. In recognition of the event, the City of Pittsburgh Council dedicated Sept. 13, 2016, as Dr. Freddie Fu Day.
5. Dr. Fu has authored more than 600 peer-reviewed articles, made more than 1,200 national and international presentations and co-authored 173 book chapters.
6. A former president of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, Dr. Fu has held membership in 55 additional professional and academic medical organizations.
