Dr. James Andrews receives commemorative football from Saints quarterback Drew Brees

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees gave James Andrews, MD, a commemorative football to recognize the orthopedic surgeon's role in Mr. Brees' record-breaking number of NFL career passing yards, KSRO.com reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. In 2006, Dr. Andrews performed shoulder surgery on Mr. Brees. The quarterback had torn his right labrum during a game.

2. Dr. Andrews is one of nearly 200 of Mr. Brees' former teammates, coaches and mentors who received commemorative footballs.

3. Mr. Brees sent out the gift in recognition of the individuals who played a role in helping him become the NFL's all-time career passing leader, a title he earned in October.

4. Dr. Andrews is a founding partner of Gulf Breeze, Fla.-based Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. His center is internationally recognized for its sports medicine treatments.

5. Dr. Andrews is the Tampa Bay Rays' orthopedic medical director.
