USA Gymnastics unveiled Edward Nyman, Jr., PhD, as its first full-time director of sports medicine and science on Monday, but the former gymnast and coach lasted just one day in the role, according to CNN.
"Dr. Nyman’s employment will not continue due to a conflict of interest, and we will immediately renew our search to identify a qualified individual to lead our sports medicine and research efforts," the Indianapolis-based organization announced via Twitter.
The organization did not disclose any information as to why the conflict of interest was not uncovered during the hiring process and has re-opened its search for a new candidate.
USAG, the governing body for gymnastics in the U.S., has failed to hold on to a president for longer than nine months since Larry Nassar was arrested for sexual assault in 2016. He pleaded guilty to the charges in November 2017.
This is also the third time since August that a USAG hire has lasted less than one week. Mary Bono resigned as interim CEO after just four days and coach Mary Lee Tracy was asked to resign after she defended Mr. Nassar post-arrest.
Last week CEO Li Li Leung also came under fire for comments relating to Mr. Nassar who had treated her in the 1990s when she was competing as a gymnast.
"I was seen by Larry Nassar myself, but I was not abused by him, and the reason why I wasn’t abused by him is because my coach was by my side when he saw me. I was seen by him in a public setting and so I understand what the setting needs to be like in order to ensure safety for our athletes," Ms. Leung said in an interview on the Today Show last week.
