The NFL's CMO, Allen Sills, MD, praised the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz for reporting his concussion to officials during the Jan. 5 playoff defeat to the Seattle Seahawks, The Morning Call reports.
Dr. Sills, a neurosurgeon at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center, labeled Mr. Wentz's actions as "heroic" after bringing attention to the severity of concussions in the sport.
Mr. Wentz was injured in a helmet-to-helmet clash in the first quarter. After reporting the injury, he was evaluated in the medical tent and was unable to return to action having failed the concussion protocol.
"You can't see a brain injury from the outside, but that does not make it any less severe or any less dangerous to the recipient than any of those other injuries," said Dr. Sills, who specializes in the treatment of athletes.
"It's a great example to players at all ages and levels that you only have one brain and you shouldn't take chances with a brain injury," he added.
