Pennsylvania now offers the BrainSTEPS program as a free, statewide endeavor to help student athletes meet their educational needs while recovering from a traumatic brain injury, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 3,900 children were hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury in 2006, an increase from the 3,700 children hospitalized in 2004. Some of these injuries are incurred during sporting activities and can cause learning disabilities. There were recently 400 new cases placed in the BrainSTEPS treatment database.
The accommodations made for students in the BrainSTEPS program include partial school days, repeating or dropping classes, acquiring textbooks to keep at home to avoid further injury from carrying them in their backpacks, altering homework and tests and restricting stimuli, such as being in large crowds.
