The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine bestowed the 2018 Robert E. Leach Sports Medicine Leadership Award upon orthopedic surgeon James Tibone, MD.
Here's what you should know:
1. One of the society's top honors, the annual award goes to individuals who have made a significant contribution to sports medicine. It includes a $5,000 donation to the winner's chosen charity.
2. AOSSM named Dr. Tibone the 45th winner of the award July 6, during the society's annual meeting in San Diego.
3. Dr. Tibone is a professor at the Los Angeles-based University of Southern California Center for Sports Medicine. He co-directs the USC Center for Athletic Medicine.
4. Dr. Tibone is a team physician for USC intercollegiate teams and an orthopedic consultant for the Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks.
5. Dr. Tibone was the Kerlan-Jobe Sports Medicine Fellowship director from 1984 to 1995. He served as the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery's North American editor and is the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Association's past president.
