Charles Bush-Joseph, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush in Chicago, recently discussed common baseball injuries and safety precautions that Major League Baseball players take to avoid them on Comcast SportsNet, according to a practice news release.
He says baseball players see injuries of attrition because they play nearly every day, so the players are often playing through minor injuries. There are several players now in the MLB suffering from oblique injuries, which Dr. Bush-Joseph says the recovery could be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. "These kind of muscle tendon injuries are lingering and more difficult to deal with," he says.
The MLB also upgraded the bat specs forthis year's season so there will be less splintering to reduce related injuries, says Dr. Bush-Joseph, who sits on the MLB Medical Advisory Board.
