Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee developed an orthopedic implant technology for sustained drug release, pharmabiz.com reports.
Here are three things to know.
1. Aseptic loosening and periprosthetic bacterial infection are the two leading causes of implant failure.
2. The new technology includes a metal implant with hydroxyapatite coating loaded with antibiotics. It is designed to maintain osseointegration while providing sustained antibiotic release to the target area to prevent infection. The implant coating continuously releases the drug up to 180 hours after implantation.
3. Biotech Consortium India Limited acquired the technology.
