A static magnetic field enhances human bone differentiation in 3D-printed titanium scaffolds, according to a study published in The FASEB Journal and reported in Medscape.
Four things to know:
1. The study authors investigated the osteogenic effect of static magnetic field treatment on human bone-derived mesenchymal stem cells in scaffolds in vitro and in a rat model of bone defect.
2. In vitro, static magnetic field treatment enhanced mineralization and calcium accumulation in the scaffold compared to scaffolds treated outside of a magnetic field. Researchers said the treatment promotes osteogenic differentiation.
3. The in vivo experiment demonstrated bone regeneration and osseointegration was enhanced by static magnetic field treatment in the rat model of bone defect.
4. Study authors concluded moderate static magnetic field treatment is a safe and effective method for enhancing osteogenesis in 3D-printed scaffolds.
