Medtronic CEO Omar Ishrak becomes Intel board chairman: 4 details

The Intel board elected outgoing Medtronic CEO Omar Ishrak, PhD, as chairman, the company announced on Jan. 21.

Four things to know:

1. Dr. Ishrak will succeed Andy Bryant, who stepped down during the company's board meeting on Jan. 15. Mr. Bryant will remain on the board through the end of the year.

2. Dr. Ishrak is currently the Executive Chairman and CEO of Medtronic, but he announced last August he plans to retire as CEO on April 26, 2020. He has led Medtronic since June 2011 and during his tenure the company grew to report more than $30 billion in annual revenue.

3. While leading Medtronic, Dr. Ishrak oversaw the company's acquisition of Covidien and transitioned Medtronic's headquarters to Ireland.

4. Prior to joining Medtronic, Dr. Ishrak served as president and CEO of GE Healthcare Systems, the $12 billion division of GE Healthcare.
