From plans to spin off its spine and dental lines to leadership changes and a new robotic platform, here are six key developments from Zimmer Biomet since January:
1. The FDA cleared Zimmer Biomet's Rosa partial knee system for robotic-assisted partial knee replacements in April. The robot has 2D and 3D imaging technology and intraoperative data collection on soft tissue and bone anatomy designed to improve bone cut accuracy and range of motion gap analysis. The clearance comes two years after the company launched the Rosa knee system for total knee replacement.
2. Ivan Tornos was appointed COO of Zimmer Biomet in March. The newly created role includes overseeing global business and leading global operations. Mr. Tornos joined the company in 2018 as group president of orthopedics and was named group president of global business and the Americas a year later.
3. In February, Zimmer Biomet announced plans to spin off its spine and dental units to focus more on its orthopedic and sports medicine units. The spinoff, expected to close in mid-2022, will create two independent publicly traded companies: Zimmer Biomet, focused on orthopedics, and NewCo, focused on spine and dental.
4. Vafa Jamali was named CEO of NewCo in February. Mr. Jamali has more than 25 years of experience in the medical device industry, including executive leadership roles at Medtronic, Baxter, Cardinal Health and Covidien.
5. Zimmer Biomet President and CEO Bryan Hanson will replace nonexecutive chair of the board Larry Glasscock, who is retiring in May. Click here for three other updates to the board of directors announced in February.
6. Former Medtronic executive Ellison Humphrey was named Zimmer Biomet's chief transformation officer in January. Ms. Humphrey is responsible for connecting key initiatives and implementing a more integrated transformation strategy.
