As physicians shift to management-led organizations, procurement officers gain influence over purchasing decisions leading to increased physician dissatisfaction, according to Business Wire.

1. A survey by Frontline of Health reported a mere 25 percent of physicians working in a management-led organization are likely to recommend their organization to someone as a place to work or receive care.
2. In physician-led organizations, a reported 40 percent of physicians would recommend their organization as a place to work or receive care.
3. Only 20 percent of surgeons reported they strongly agree or agree that they have complete discretion over decisions pertaining to medical devices.
4. A reported 65 percent of physicians claim formularies limit their decision about prescriptions with more than 50 percent claiming formularies limit their ability to provide quality care.
5. In terms of purchasing criteria, approximately 50 percent of surgeons cite lowest price as an important criterion compared to almost 75 percent of procurement officers.

7. Because payers pressure physicians and their organizations to instrument risk-based models such as bundled payments, 69 percent of physicians in Massachusetts in management-led organizations stated using one form of risk-based payment as opposed to 55 percent of physician-led organizations.
8. This change in decision-making power alters the way physicians and surgeons learn about new products. They increasingly obtain their information through manufacturer websites, academic journals and conferences.
