Pediatric orthopedic surgeon Liebe S. Diamond, MD, passed away on May 17 at the age of 86, according to The Baltimore Sun. She died from lymphoma.
Born with constriction ring syndrome, Dr. Diamond lost some of her fingers and toes in utero. Throughout her childhood, she had more than 24 hand and feet surgeries.
Equipped with a medical degree from Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Diamond went on to complete her pediatrics internship and surgical residency at New York City-based Sinai Hospital.
In 1957, Dr. Diamond became the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania's first female orthopedic surgical resident.
She specialized in pediatric orthopedics, with an emphasis on hand and limb deformities. Dr. Diamond went on to serve as an orthopedic surgery professor at Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical School.
She co-founded the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America in 1971.
Dr. Diamond retired in 1997.
