Here are 24 hospitals expanding their spine and neurosurgery services in 2019:
M Health Fairview Medical Center at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis opened a surgical suite providing neurosurgical services. The suite features three ORs and a T-shaped, movable MRI machine to enhance patient outcomes and surgery success rates.
Mercy Fort Smith (Ark.) opened a neurosurgery center featuring husband-wife neurosurgical team Kenneth Foxx, MD, and Kate Czerniecka-Foxx, MD.
Amherst, N.Y.-based Dent Neurologic Institute and the University at Buffalo (N.Y.) Neurosurgery opened the first phase of their joint venture Comprehensive Neuroscience Center in Amherst. The center will cost about $40 million, and a freestanding surgery center is set to open in 2021.
WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va., is adding five operating rooms, including two with a neurosurgery focus. Two of the ORs will feature a da Vinci Intuitive Xi surgical robot and will be operational in early 2020.
Kettering Health Network Troy (Ohio) Hospital opened a medical office, offering specialist care in spine and neurosurgery. The 135,000-square-foot hospital features 28 inpatient beds, an emergency room, ICU as well as lab and imaging.
Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital is building a $250 million spine and orthopedic tower across from its main hospital. The tower will have 24 ORs and offer inpatient and outpatient spine procedures.
St. Louis-based Barnes-Jewish Hospital opened its neuro-critical care unit, which features 44 beds and 24 ICU rooms. The facility is for patients recovering from neurosurgery or conditions such as stroke or epilepsy.
Boston-based Brigham Health opened Brigham and Women's Health Care Center in Pembroke, Mass. The 30,000-square-foot facility offers neurosurgery and orthopedic services.
Spine-focused Ascension Saint Vincent Orthopedic Hospital in Newburgh, Ind., opened in July. The $95 million hospital features 24 inpatient rooms, 10 ORs and two procedure rooms.
Skokie (Ill.) Hospital switched its focus from general surgery to spine and orthopedic care. The hospital now handles spine and orthopedic cases for the entire Evanston, Ill.-based NorthShore University HealthSystem.
Seymour, Ind.-based Schneck Medical Center's new Schneck Professional Building unveiled a new neurosurgery and pain center. The center also features primary care and other services.
Overland Park, Kan.-based Saint Luke's South Hospital opened a rehabilitation center focusing on brain and spinal cord conditions. The 60-bed facility includes inpatient and outpatient services, as well as robotic devices to assist in recovery.
The American College of Surgeons certified Orange Regional Medical Center in Orange County, N.Y., as a Level II adult trauma center. ORMC now provides 24-hour immediate care in neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery.
Springfield, Mass.-based Mercy Medical Center opened the Minimally Invasive Spine Center of New England. Physicians perform minimally invasive spine and cervical procedures at the center.
HCA Healthcare-affiliated Oviedo (Fla.) Medical Center opened a spine care center on its campus. Oviedo physicians treat herniated discs, spinal stenosis, myelopathy, compression fractures and degenerative scoliosis at the center.
Amita Health St. Mary's Hospital Kankakee (Ill.) initiated a teleneurology program for speedy care in the event of a head injury, stroke or other neurological issues. The hospital has an on-call neurologist who provides examinations via video connection when a patient with neurologic symptoms arrives.
Wheeling (W.Va.) Hospital opened two ORs, with one housing a da Vinci Xi surgical robot. It offers neurosurgical procedures as well as orthopedic and robotic surgery.
Shenandoah, Texas-based Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center unveiled a new neurosurgery floor. The $16 million center features 12 ICU beds and 24 medical-surgical beds.
Little Rock, Ark.-based CHI St. Vincent opened its $30 million Arkansas Neuroscience Institute in Sherwood, focusing on improving treatments and training neurosurgeons. It features 10 beds and a new OR.
Albany Medical Center broke ground on an urgent care medical complex in Clifton Park, N.Y., which will treat spine conditions. It will also feature a satellite office for specialists with The Bone and Joint Center.
Townsen Memorial Hospital in Humble, Texas, launched an ER and two new clinics providing spine and neurosurgery services. The new facilities represent a step forward for the hospital, which underwent extensive remodeling after roughly $7 million of damage caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.
Chicago-based Northwestern Memorial Hospital launched the Northwestern Medicine Hispanic Brain and Spine Tumor Program. The program aims to improve access to neurosurgical care for the Hispanic community by eliminating cultural and linguistic barriers.
Gateway Regional Medical Center launched a new spine program in Granite City, Ill. The Spine Center at GRMC treats a variety of spine conditions including cervical and lumbar pathology, fractures, degeneration, deformity and scoliosis.
Ewa Beach, Hawaii-based The Queen's Medical Center West Oahu is expanding spine services in a large-scale renovation project. The project includes a 24-bed surgical inpatient unit and is expected to be completed in 2020.
