Albuquerque-based UNM Health received approval to build an orthopedic center in Rio Rancho, N.M., the AlbuquerqueJournal reports.

What you should know:

1. The UNM regents and the Rio Rancho Governing Body entered into a memorandum of understanding to develop a Center of Excellence for Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation.

2. The proposed two-story facility will be 50,000 square feet. It will have space for academics, rehabilitation, treatment and research.

3. UNM will move its orthopedic-related research, instruction, rehabilitation and surgical efforts to its Rio Rancho campus.

4. The orthopedic clinic costs $20 million and will be built through a tax. UNM will purchase the equipment and furniture and will cover all operating costs once the center opens.

5. UNM plans to open the building by late 2021.
