In its Physician Compensation Report 2017, Medscape compared men and women physicians' average annual salary, finding slight differences from last year's results.
Here are five things to know:
1. Men reported average annual earnings of $229,000 as primary care physicians while women reported earning $197,000.
2. The PCP earning gap decreased from last year's 17 percent to this year's 16 percent.
3. Male specialists earn 37 percent more than women specialists do on an average annual basis, up from last year's 33 percent difference.
4. The results may be impacted by the smaller percentages of women in higher-paying specialties.
5. Income differential between men and women is lower (18 percent) for physicians under the age of 34 than it is for older physicians (35 percent average difference).
