Here are 14 notable orthopedic practices that made significant expansions in 2019:
1. OrthoCarolina, based in Charlotte, N.C., opened a center in Lincolnton, N.C., which focuses on spine and sports medicine. The group was founded in 2005 and has since grown to 32 orthopedic locations with more than 300 providers.
2. Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush in Chicago opened its first freestanding physical therapy clinic in Orland Park, Ill., and a 100,000-square-foot orthopedic clinic in Oak Brook, Ill. The 20-location practice provided care to 66,000 patients in 2018 and performed more than 16,000 surgeries across six Chicago locations.
3. Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedics partnered with Leawood, Kan.-based NueHealth and Denver-based MUVE Health to expand beyond the east coast. Rothman opened offices in Doylestown Township, Pa., and Monmouth Junction, N.J., increasing its office locations to 38.
4. The Steadman Clinic based in Vail, Colo., opened a clinic in Frisco, Colo., and added Armando Vidal, MD, as its 15th physician. In November, Steadman partnered with private-equity backed Orthopedic Care Partners, which is the holding company for The Orthopaedic Institute and four other practices.
5. The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics, in Bethesda, Md., has grown to nearly 180 physicians and more than 60 locations throughout Washington, D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia, organically and through acquisitions. Physician owned and operated since 2014, the group plans to add further groups and physicians in the future.
6. Merrick, N.Y.-based The Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Group acquired Long Island Bone & Joint, with locations in Riverhead, Port Jefferson and Southampton, N.Y., as well as Max Effort Sports Physical Therapy in Holbrook, N.Y. Orlin & Cohen now features more than 50 orthopedic surgeons at 12 locations.
7. The CORE Institute, based in Phoenix, opened a clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., and acquired West Bloomfield Township, Mich.-based Lakes Ambulatory Surgical Center. The practice now has 88 physicians across 25 locations in Arizona and Michigan.
8. OrthoVirginia, based in Richmond, acquired Virginia Beach-based Virginia Institute for Sports Medicine and features more than 100 physicians across 22 office locations. The practice includes outpatient surgery centers as well as physical therapy clinics.
9. Irvine, Calif.-based Hoag Orthopedic Institute opened its fifth location in Tustin, Calif., to improve access to specialized orthopedic care in Orange County. Hoag now features more than 300 specialty physicians, including 93 orthopedic surgeons.
10. Rockville, Md.-based National Spine and Pain Centers added a practice in Gainesville, Ga., and Chicago to its growing network of 70 locations and more than 750 medical professionals.
11. Morton Grove-based Illinois Bone & Joint Institute, with more than 70 locations and 90 physicians, opened an office in Algonquin, Ill., a physician and rehabilitation clinic in Crystal Lake, Ill., and a physical therapy clinic in Palatine, Ill.
12. Resurgens Orthopaedics, based in Atlanta, began in 1999 as a merger between seven independent physician groups and now has 24 offices in Georgia with 100-plus affiliated physicians.
13. University Orthopedics in Providence, R.I., launched the Hip Preservation Institute, which features 15 providers specializing in treating hip conditions. Since its inception in 1990, UO has expanded to 13 locations with more than 40 fellowship-trained physicians.
14. Hendersonville-based Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance opened a practice in Hendersonville that provides the full spectrum of orthopedic care. TOA was founded in 1924 and has grown to 67 physicians across 19 locations.
