CON denial stalls North Carolina orthopedic hospital project

Wilmington, N.C.-based New Hanover Regional Medical Center's certificate of need application to build a $210 million hospital has been denied by state regulators, Wilmington StarNews reports.

NHRMC, a county- owned hospital sold to Charlotte, N.C.-based Novant Health in February, had not adequately made its case for the additional beds, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said in its denial letter.

The proposed Scotts Hill Community Hospital would build onto NHRMC North's emergency department. It plans to house 66 beds, 30 of which would be relocated from NHRMC's orthopedic hospital campus, according to the report.

If Scotts Hill hospital is built, the orthopedic hospital campus would scrap inpatient services.

NHRMC said it plans to appeal the CON denial by the March 11 deadline.
