Marion-based Central Indiana Orthopedics has suffered a data breach that may have exposed the protected health information of up to 83,705 individuals.
On Oct. 16, the 24-physician group noticed suspicious activity on its computer network. An investigation found that an unauthorized party accessed certain files on the practice's network.
The compromised information varies by file, but may include names, addresses, Social Security numbers and limited health information. On March 7, the practice began sending data breach notifications to all individuals whose information was contained in the affected files.
To guard against future incidents, the group contacted a cybersecurity firm, changed administrative credentials, restored operations safely and improved security measures.
