Orthopedic surgeon, former Pro Superbike Racer Dr. David Kieffer passes away at 75 — 5 things to know

On Feb. 14, orthopedic surgeon David A. Kieffer, MD, died from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, according to Road Racing World.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. Dr. Kieffer founded Laramie, Wyo.-based Gem City Bone & Joint Center, which is currently named Premier Bone & Joint Center.

 

2. In addition to his passion for orthopedics, Dr. Kieffer also was a motorcycling enthusiast and raced with the Motorcycle Roadracing Association.

 

3. From the 1980s to the late 1990s, Dr. Kieffer competed in several racing sessions in the AMA Pro Superbike Championship. The AMA named him AMA Sportsman of The Year in 1986.

 

4. Dr. Kieffer combined his passions for orthopedics and motorcycles by performing surgical procedures on several renowned professional racers including Ricky Johnson, Fred Merkel and Tripp Nobles, among several others.

 

5. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Kings County Hospital, associated with New York State University in New York City.
