Consolidation has increased among orthopedic practices amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with four supergroups of 100-plus physicians formed in Texas, Florida, Tennessee and New Jersey in the past 13 months:
1. Seven orthopedic practices in New Jersey are merging to form Ortho Alliance NJ. The partnership joins more than 100 physicians from the practices, which have more than 25 New Jersey locations.
2. In January, six orthopedic groups in Texas merged to form OrthoLoneStar. The combined entity has more than 150 physicians, over 40 locations and 1,000 employees. Bryan Williamson, MD, serves as medical director of the group, which is 100 percent physician-owned.
3. Nashville-based Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance, Knoxville-based Tennessee Orthopaedic Clinics and Columbia-based Mid-Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic agreed in August to merge into a single group. The combined group has 104 physicians, more than 27 locations and over 800 employees.
4. Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa merged with Clearwater-based OrthoCare Florida in March to become the biggest orthopedic group in the state. The combined entity includes 150 providers and 17 locations across the Tampa Bay area.
