Construction is underway on Hospital for Special Surgery's 12-story tower adjacent to its main hospital campus in New York City.
HSS Kellen Tower, a 94,000-square-foot clinical building, will expand spine and joint replacement care with three private inpatient floors, physician offices, exam rooms and on-site imaging, according to the hospital's website.
The capacity created by the inpatient units and renovation of recovery floors in the main hospital will allow HSS to convert from 30 percent to 70 percent private patient rooms across its main campus, "an institutional priority underscored by the pandemic and necessary to optimizing the healing environment for our patients," according to the organization.
The expansion will allow for an increase in the number of operating rooms at the main campus.
"This transformation positions HSS to do what we do best well into the future," said Louis Shapiro, HSS president and CEO. "It will allow us to give our patients who come from around the world the very best care for decades to come."
The project, which has received more than $130 million from donors, is on track to open in 2024.
