Greg Altman, MD, and Darren Frank, MD, performed ankle surgery on Oneil Cruz, a player for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Mr. Cruz underwent surgery to stabilize his left fractured fibula and fix an injury to the syndesmosis, a fibrous joint held together by ligaments located near the ankle, according to an April 10 MLB release.
The injury happened during a game on April 9 when Mr. Cruz collided with White Sox catcher Seby Zavala at home plate. The operation took place at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh the same day.
Dr. Altman is co-division director of orthopedic trauma at the hospital. He also serves as an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at the Drexel University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.
Dr. Frank is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at Allegheny General Hospital. He is also a member of the Major League Baseball Team Physicians Association.
The expectation is that Mr. Cruz will return to play in four months, the team announced.
