A jury handed down a $2.5 million verdict in favor of a man who sued an orthopedic surgeon and Stamford (Conn.) Hospital over treatment for a broken leg, The Connecticut Post reported Oct. 2.
According to a lawsuit, Carlos Ortiz fell and fractured his leg in 2016, and he was taken to the hospital, where Christopher Meltsakos, MD, operated on him. Mr. Ortiz alleged that after initial treatment, Dr. Meltsakos, a resident at the time, didn't provide proper care and monitoring.
Later on, Mr. Ortiz developed compartment syndrome, had to undergo several surgeries and remained in the hospital for more than a month. He lost all use of his left leg.
The jury on Sept. 29 found Dr. Meltsakos was 60 percent to blame, while the hospital was responsible for 40 percent, the report said. The hospital settled the case with Mr. Ortiz before the trial and won't be held to pay its portion of the verdict.
Stamford Hospital didn't provide a comment to The Connecticut Post, and Dr. Meltsako's lawyers didn't respond to the publication's requests for comment.
