The Memphis Grizzlies have seen more injuries during the 2023-24 basketball season than any other NBA team, according to research from sports betting group Canada Sports Betting.
The Grizzlies have faced eight team injuries during the season, according to a March 7 press release sent to Becker's.
The Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers have tied for second, with seven injuries each, while the Chicago Bulls have seen five injuries. The other six teams making the top 10 have seen four injuries each.
Here are the physicians providing care for the 10 NBA teams facing the most injuries this season:
1. Memphis Grizzlies: The Grizzlies are cared for by head team physician and orthopedist Thomas Giel, MD. He is a knee, shoulder and sports medicine specialist at OrthoSouth in Memphis, Tenn.
2. Los Angeles Lakers: The Lakers are cared for by head team physician and director of orthopedic surgery Kristofer Jones, MD. Dr. Jones is an orthopedic surgeon at Los Angeles-based UCLA Health specializing in sports-related musculoskeletal injuries.
2. Portland Trail Blazers: The Blazers have been cared for by Donald Roberts, MD, head team physician and orthopedic surgeon, since 1994. He specializes in arthroscopic surgery and treats arthritic conditions of the knee, including with total knee replacements and tibial osteotomies.
3. Chicago Bulls: The Bulls are cared for by Brian Cole, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in Chicago treating patients at Rush Medical Center and Rush Oak Park Hospital. He has 25 years of experience and has performed over 24,000 surgeries.
4. Miami Heat: The Heat are cared for by head team physician F. Harlan Selesnick, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care in Coral Gables, Fla. He has been the team's physician since 1988. Dr. Selesnick recently operated on point guard Josh Richardson.
4. Milwaukee Bucks: The Bucks are cared for by head team physician William Raasch, MD, a sports medicine specialist at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
4. New York Knicks: The Knicks are cared for by Answorth Allen, MD, who has been head team physician and orthopedist since 2005. He is a professor of clinical orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.
4. Philadelphia 76ers: The 76ers are cared for by a team of orthopedic surgeons at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia.
4. Phoenix Suns: The Suns are cared for by head team physician and orthopedist Evan Lederman, MD, a physician at Phoenix-based Banner Health.
4. Toronto Raptors: The Raptors are cared for by team orthopedic surgeon Paul Marks, MD. He specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopy and reconstruction of the shoulder and knee and sees patients at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.
