Colleagues and family members of orthopedic surgeon Benjamin Mauck, MD, are remembering him a year after his death on July 11, 2023.
Dr. Mauck worked at Campbell Clinic's Collierville, Tenn., office, and the practice observed a companywide moment of silence the morning of July 11, according to a Facebook post.
Jan Szatkowski, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Indianapolis-based IU Health Methodist Hospital who knew Dr. Mauck, reflected on his death and in a July 11 LinkedIn post.
"Ben was not only an incredible person but also a cherished friend to many," Dr. Szatkowski wrote. "More importantly, he was a devoted father, loving husband, and an exceptional surgeon. I urge all orthopedic surgeons and healthcare workers to observe a moment of silence in his honor. Let us take this time to reflect on the preciousness of life and how quickly it can change."
Campbell Clinic also shared a GoFundMe page to raise money for the Mauck Family Trust to support Dr. Mauck's children. The fundraiser, organized by Bill McKeel, remembered Dr. Mauck for his devotion to his family.
Hand surgeon William Weller, MD, a colleague, described Dr. Mauck as a "gifted surgeon" in a July 2023 statement.
"Ben was a mentor to myself and many other aspiring orthopedic surgeons and hand surgeons, he had a dogged approach to pursuing excellence in every aspect of his practice from bedside to operating room … As a friend Ben was always there to help when needed. Whether assisting partners with patient care or helping others in their time of need, he was always one of the first people to volunteer."
Dr. Mauck, a hand surgeon, was fatally shot in an exam room. Collierville police charged a 29-year-old man in the shooting, and his trial date was reset to Aug. 27, ABC 24 reported July 11.
