The most cost-effective orthopedic procedure of 2025

Orthopedic

While orthopedic surgeons are paving the way for new procedures in 2025, old procedures that have been around for decades may be the key to cost effectiveness this year.

Ask Orthopedic Surgeons is a weekly series of questions posed to orthopedic surgeons around the country about clinical, business and policy issues affecting spine care. Becker's invites all orthopedic surgeon and specialist responses.

Question: What will the most cost-effective orthopedic procedure be this year?

Bob Yin, MD. Orthopedic Surgeon at Providence St. Jude Medical Center (Yorba Linda, Calif.): My choice for the most cost-effective orthopedic procedure in 2025 is total hip replacement. Introduced to the U.S. by Sir John Charnley in the 1960s, this operation has been highly successful, significantly improving patients' quality of life with a low complication rate compared to other major surgeries. When considering cost-effectiveness, we look for procedures with high success rates, low re-operation rates and well-established implant systems familiar to surgical staff and equipment managers. Total hip arthroplasty fits all these criteria.

While newer orthopedic procedures may seem cost-effective, they are often less supported by peer-reviewed literature and come with higher equipment and implant costs. The cost-effectiveness of total hip arthroplasty is further enhanced when performed at high-volume facilities like Providence St. Jude Medical Center. Here, standardized surgical protocols and perioperative care pathways ensure safer, more efficient care. Our multidisciplinary, team-based approach to total joint care results in better, more reproducible outcomes for patients and a more efficient work environment for staff.

We have standardized workflows among surgeons to streamline equipment and staffing needs in the operating room and on the floors. Despite being practiced for decades, total hip replacement in 2025 continues to allow for innovation through workflow standardization and care optimization, making it an ideal procedure in an environment where cost-effectiveness is crucial.
