F. Alan Barber, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at Plano (Texas) Orthopedic Sports Medicine & Spine Center. During his career, he has performed more than 15,000 knee and shoulder procedures with a focus on cartilage damage repair, ligament injuries and dislocations.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Barber:
1. Dr. Barber began his career in the U.S. Army and served as chief of orthopedic surgery at military hospitals in Germany and Kentucky, as well as chief of foot surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, before retiring from the Army as a lieutenant colonel. During his time in service, Dr. Barber earned the U.S. Army Surgeon General's Physician Recognition Award.
2. Upon leaving the Army, Dr. Barber completed a fellowship in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery at Medical Arts Hospital in Dallas and began practicing medicine as a civilian. In addition to his current practice, Dr. Barber is an assistant clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
3. Beyond practicing medicine, Dr. Barber contributes to the orthopedics field by serving on editorial advisory boards for professional journals, and he has earned the reviewer of the year recognition for Arthroscopy Journal.
4. Dr. Barber is a lecturer for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and instructor at the Orthopedic Learning Center for the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
5. Dr. Barber earned his medical degree at Houston-based Baylor College of Medicine and completed additional orthopedic surgery training at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu.
