Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge added the Curve image-guided surgery system, according to an Oct. 17 announcement in Prince William Living.
Curve, from Brainlab, was installed at the hospital's spine center and is being used for spinal fusion and stabilization procedures. The system displays 3D images of a patient's anatomy, and surgeons can track their positioning on the operating table relative to instruments.
"Like a GPS for the spine, this technology lets us know exactly where we are at all times," David Weiner, MD, a spine surgeon with the hospital said in the announcement. "It’s an incredibly powerful 'surgical sixth sense,' allowing us to reliably place and double check screws during procedures, such as lumbar fusions. This precise tracking helps us keep the patient safer and makes surgery more efficient."
