Orthopedic spine surgeon Kate McCarthy, MD, of Arkansas Specialty Orthopaedics in Little Rock, strives to interest young women in orthopedics through the Perry Initiative, according to the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

1. Dr. McCarthy hopes to expose young women to the field of orthopedics, which is only 7 percent female.
2. Specializing in scoliosis, Dr. McCarthy emphasizes girls are eight times more likely to develop progressive curves than boys.
3. Little Rock high school students can experience surgical lessons and listen to female orthopedic surgeons and engineers speak through the Perry Initiative program, held at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
4. Dr. McCarthy is presenting on the anatomy of the spine at the program.
5. She received her medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. She then completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, and an orthopedic spine surgery fellowship at Norton Leatherman Spine Center in Louisville, Ky.
