Here are five spine surgeons who received honors in the past month.
The New Hampshire Union Leader honored the late spinal cord specialist William "Ed" Kois, MD, with its 17th annual Nackey S. Loeb First Amendment Award. Dr. Kois filed a whistleblower complaint in 2016 about poor conditions and substandard care at the Manchester (N.H.) VA Medical Center. Dr. Kois was director of the VA Medical Center's spinal cord clinic. He died in July after a car crash.
Washoe Valley, Nevada-based Renown Health recognized Jay Morgan, MD, with the 2019 Arthur J. Lurie, MD, Distinguished Physician Award for outstanding healthcare contributions to the Northern Nevada community. He specializes in artificial lumbar disc replacement and treating complex spine disorders and cerebral vascular disease.
Three surgeons from Rockford (Ill.) Spine Center made the American Registry's "America's Most Honored Professionals" list in 2019. Michael Roh, MD, Christopher Sliva, MD, and Fred Sweet, MD, were recognized for performing within the top 10 percent of professionals in their area of expertise. The three are partners in Rockford Spine Center, which Drs. Roh and Sweet co-founded in 2003.
