Thomas Kaye, MD, died Jan. 29 when a plane he was flying crashed in Taylor County, W.Va., reports WDTV.

Dr. Kaye, 67, was a retired neurosurgeon who previously practiced with Trinity Health of New England Medical Group in Waterbury, Conn.

Taylor County Sheriff Terry Austin told WWLP that Dr. Kaye had just purchased the plane, which he was flying home to Massachusetts from Indiana. He had stopped at North Central West Virginia Airport to refuel.

He was the only person onboard the plane.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
