Christopher Battista, MD, of Lowcountry Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Summerville, S.C., performed the state's first surgery using a 3D-printed custom implant.
The custom implant was used to replace a diseased disc, according to a news release shared with Becker's March 6.
"3D printed spine implant technology provides a truly custom implant that mimics the properties of the individual patient’s bone in order to promote faster healing and long-term comfort," Dr. Battista said in the news release.
Dr. Battista specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery and is highly trained in robotic surgery, according to Lowcountry Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine's website.
