University Orthopedics becomes 1st in Rhode Island to debut Intracept spine procedure

Spine

East Providence, R.I.-based University Orthopedics has become the first in the state to offer the Intracept spine procedure for patients seeking relief from vertebrogenic pain.

S. Chris Tian, MD, successfully performed two Intracept procedures at University Orthopedics' East Bay Surgery Center, according to an Aug. 23 press release sent to Becker's.

The minimally invasive outpatient procedure is implant-free and preserves the overall structure of the spine. It targets the basivertebral nerve with radiofrequency energy, rendering it unable to transmit pain signals to the brain.

In clinical studies, Intracept demonstrated long-term improvements in pain and function, a decrease in patient opioid use long term and less than a 0.3 percent rate of serious complications.
