The spine technology startup Waypoint Orthopedics recently raised $650,000 from Runway Healthcare, a medtech accelerator, according to a CityBiz report.
The company, founded by Stephen Banco, MD, and Runway, developed a spine surgery navigation tool with an app-based operating system to help surgeons place pedicle screws. The system received FDA approval in September as an alternative to fluoroscopy.
Waypoint GPS includes proprietary color-sensing technology to guide surgeons during vertebral fixation, according to the report. The technology could lead to 100% screw placement accuracy.
With the most recent investment, Waypoint has raised $3 million.
Dr. Banco is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon at Wyomissing, Pa.-based Keystone Spine & Pain Management Center. He is a founding partner of The Surgical Institute of Reading and fellow with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
