As spine surgeries become more popular in the ASC setting, some surgeons believe that these procedures may be the next great frontier for outpatient care.
"The five-year horizon for spine surgery is for the trend toward outpatient surgery to continue as outcomes and efficacy are proven. I see continued improvements in minimally invasive lumbar spinal fusion surgery and arthroplasty will continue evolving. At some point we would expect Medicare to approve the same inpatient codes for instrumentation in the ASC," Mark Testaiuti, MD, surgeon at Coastal Spine in Mount Laurel, N.J., told Becker's.
Here are eight ASCs at the forefront of outpatient spine surgery:
The Illinois Spine Institute has two locations in the state, two spine specialists, and one pain management specialist. The practice offers interventional pain management, spinal surgery, minimally invasive spinal surgery and nonsurgical spine care.
Inland Northwest Spine & Neurosurgery in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, offers both surgical and nonsurgical spine care for patients. The system has one specialist who is aided by nurses and assistants. Inland offers the newest minimally invasive spine surgery options.
Mayfield Spine Surgery Center in Cincinnati has completed over 17,000 spine procedures since 2007. The system is staffed by 19 neurosurgeons that specialize in minimally invasive spine procedures and physical rehabilitation.
Mobile (Ala.) Surgery Center offers several orthopedic care options, including spine surgery. The ASC has 23 orthopedic specialists on staff.
North Metro Surgery Center in Thornton, Colo., has a spine surgery program offering disc arthroplasty. The practice's spine surgeons are board-certified in orthopedic surgery. Its spine specialists are Michael Janssen, DO, and Joseph Morreale, MD.
DISC Surgery Center in Newport Beach, Calif., has multiple spine surgeons who specialize in minimally invasive procedures. The system is also enrolling patients in an artificial disc replacement trial.
Orthopedic and Spine Centers of Wisconsin in Madison has six locations in the state and offer patients both surgical and nonsurgical spine care options.
Tallahassee (Fla.) Orthopedic Clinic has 12 locations across Florida and Georgia. The team offers nonsurgical care and spine procedures for patients, including several minimally invasive procedures. The system has five spine specialists on staff.
