Orthopedic, Neurosurgeon Roles: Medical Teaching, Administrative & Research

The American College of Surgeons and Health Policy Research Institute released a report detailing the physicians who were teaching in each medical specialty.

There were 1,049 active surgical specialists who were involved in medical teaching in 2009, and 122 of them were orthopedic surgeons. There were 29 active neurosurgeon specialists involved in medical teaching.

 

The report also noted that there were 67 orthopedic surgeons serving in administrative roles and 98 participating in medical researcher. Among neurosurgeons, 18 were serving in administrative roles and 29 were involved in medical research.

 

Comparatively, there were 160 general surgeons in medical teaching and 185 in administrative roles. The data was collected from the AMA Physician Masterfile, January 2009.
