Neurosurgeon Dan Surdell, MD, and rhinologist Christie Barnes, MD, performed a cerebrospinal fluid leak repair at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha on a woman whose CSF leaked out of her nose for two years, USA Today reports.
Here are three things to know.
1. The patient, who also suffered from chronic headaches that greatly impaired her sleep, had been diagnosed with allergies. Her symptoms began after a 2013 car crash in which her face hit the dashboard.
2. In March, Carla Schneider, PA, diagnosed the patient with a CSF leak at Nebraska Medicine. She was losing half a liter of CSF a day.
3. According to the CSF Leak Association, the leaks affect at least 5 in 100,000 people each year.
