Here are six spine and neurosurgeons making headlines this week.

Kornelis Poelstra, MD, PhD, implanted what was reported to be the first Molybdenum-Rhenium rod in a patient during a spinal fusion on the West Coast. Dr. Poelstra spoke to Becker's about the MoRe alloy and how robotics will develop in spine surgery.

Keith Bridwell, MD, and Munish Gupta, MD, of St. Louis-based Washington University School of Medicine, published a textbook on spine surgery, which covers the full spectrum of spine surgery, including degenerative spine disorders, spinal deformities, tumors, fractures and infections.

John Cowan, MD, a neurosurgeon and conservative Republican, launched his campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives. Dr. Cowan is seeking election to the 14th Congressional District, which includes 14 counties in northwest Georgia. 

Neurosurgeon Mahesh Karandikar, MD, PhD, joined McLaren Flint (Mich.), a 278-bed hospital as part of Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care. 

Kenneth Nwosu, MD, performed the first spine surgery in King County, Wash., with the new ExcelsiusGPS at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way.
