Here are four innovations designed by spine and neurosurgeons in the past month:

Melissa Erickson, MD, of Duke University in Durham, N.C., remodelled surgical helmets into respirators for healthcare workers treating COVID-19 patients.

Randall Porter, MD, a neurosurgeon at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, designed an app that aims to bridge the communication gap between patients and their families during the coronavirus pandemic.

Manish Shah, MD, worked with scientists at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston to create a pediatric imaging device that does not require infants to be put under anesthesia.

Dusty Richardson, MD, of Billings (Mont.) Clinic developed 3D-printed masks with a replaceable filter to stem the spread of COVID-19.
