Neuromuscular Mouth Guards Designed to Prevent and Track Concussions

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

New neuromuscular aligned mouth guards may decrease the impact of concussion and increase spine alignment for athletes, according to several sources.

Several professional football and basketball players use neuromuscular mouth guards, designed to direct and distribute the impact of force to the jaw, which minimizes lacerations, damage to the teeth and concussions, according to a report in USA Today. There have also been reports of easier breathing when using the mouth guard. The mouth guard is designed to keep the mouth joint socket position down and forward.

Additionally, the Cleveland Clinic is currently developing a mouth guard that can measure the hardness of hits to a football player's helmet, according to a local ONN report. The robotic-based Bluetooth technology quantifies the impact, detects concussions and tells coaches whether a player should be removed from the game.
