Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez is heading to see James Andrews, MD, to have his shoulder evaluated, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
Here's what you should know.
1. Mr. Alvarez is recovering from a 2015 shoulder surgery. He was attempting to pitch in the minor leagues, but had his rehabilitation stint cut short once he experienced pain.
A second shoulder operation could be on the horizon for Mr. Alvarez. If that's the case, it seems likely he would miss the 2017 season.
2. Dr. Andrews is one of the founding members of Andrews Institute for Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Fla. He is one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the world, and his center is internationally recognized for its sports medicine treatment.
3. Dr. Andrews is the orthopedic medical director for the Tampa Bay Rays. He has seen several professional athletes throughout his career.
