Atlanta-based Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center earned a $13 million grant from The Marcus Foundation for a multicenter clinical trial to evaluate stem cell treatments for osteoarthritis.
Here are four things to know:
1. Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center Director Scott D. Boden, MD, will serve as the principal investigator.
2. The researchers will compare traditional cortisone injection outcomes to autologous bone marrow concentrate stem cell injection. They will also assess manufactured stem cells from umbilical cord tissue and adipose-derived stem cells.
3. Other organizations participating in the study include:
- Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health
- Durham, N.C.-based Duke University
- Gulf Breeze, Fla.-based Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine
- Atlanta-based Georgia Institute of Technology
4. The Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center employs 24 physicians across nine locations.
