Whole bone marrow aspirate-derived stem cells may have greatest potential for spine surgery, study finds

Biologics

Vertebral body mesenchymal stem cells derived from whole bone marrow aspirate may provide alternative stem cell sources for spine surgery applications, according to a study in Spine.

Here are three things to know:

1. Study authors isolated BMA-derived MSCs and MSCs derived from density-gradient centrifugation from vertebral bodies. Researchers then cultured the stem cells under hypoxic or normoxic conditions.

2. MSCs derived from whole BMA demonstrated greater proliferation, larger colonies and differentiated onto osteogenic and chondrogenic lineage with greater ability than the other stem cells.

3. Researchers also found the HOXB8 protein was more efficiently upregulated in MSCs derived from whole BMA under hypoxia.
