Somers Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Group performs 1st live stem cell knee injection

Biologics

Physicians at Carmel, N.Y.-based Somers Orthopaedic & Spine Surgery Center have performed the first autologous live stem cell knee injection.

Sports medicine and total joint replacement specialist Douglas Fauser, MD, and plastic surgeon Michael Baroody, MD, performed the procedure on April 22, according to a May 15 press release.

The injection is performed under general anesthesia, and administers purified concentrated live stem cells derived from the patient's own abdominal fat.

Dr. Fauser is dedicated to leading the way in non-operative treatments for osteoarthritis.

"This first-of-its-kind procedure at OSSC utilizes autologous live stem cells, derived from the patient's own body, to potentially revolutionize the management of joint degeneration. Our goal is not just to alleviate symptoms but to target the underlying causes of osteoarthritis, offering patients a promising new pathway to recovery without surgery," Dr. Fauser said in the release.
