Durham, N.C.-based Duke University has won a $3.9 million grant to study gender differences in ACL injuries, according to a Dec. 20 report from WRAL News.
The five-year grant will research why women are more prone to ACL injuries than men. Research will be led by Louis DeFrate, PhD, a distinguished professor of orthopedic surgery with Duke.
Women are around 10 times more likely to have ACL tears compared to men, according to the report. Dr. DeFrate will examine biological factors, including the shapes of the knees, how women move versus how men move, as well as factors in the blood.
The study aims to enroll about 200 adults under the age of 40 and will include participants without a history of ACL injury.
