7 things to know about Dr. Marshall R. Urist, bone morphogenetic protein pioneer

Biologics

that demineralized bone matrix activity induces bone when implanted ectopically into the muscle or under the skin due to bone morphogenetic proteins.

Here are seven things to know about Dr. Urist.

1. Dr. Urist received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

2. He was a veteran: Dr. Urist joined World War II as chief of orthopedics in the 22nd General Hospital Division in England and the 97th General Hospital Division in Germany.

3. After leaving the military, he became a senior resident at Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital and underwent fellowship training in orthopedic surgery Children's Hospital in Boston, where he worked on poliomyelitis management.

4. In 1965, Dr. Urist demonstrated that DBM implanted under the skin or muscles of animals could induce new bone formation. Dr. Urist pioneered the concept of a substance naturally present in bone that is responsible for regeneration and bone repair activity, calling it the bone inductive principle BMP, or bone morphogenetic protein.

5. Dr. Urist's discovery led to the development of new bone regeneration products by taking advantage of the basic characteristics of BMPs as a potent bone-forming agent in vivo, with the ability to restore bone even after birth.

6. Dr. Urist was an adjunct professor at UCLA and served as editor-in-chief of Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research for 27 years. He published over 415 articles in scientific journals.

7. He ran an avocado ranch near Fallbrook in San Diego County. Dr. Urist died in 2001 at 86 years of age due to complications from cardiovascular disease.
