Intraoperative MRI suite allows for tumor imaging mid-surgery — 3 insights

Imaging

St. George, Utah-based Dixie Regional Medical Center installed an intraoperative MRI suite to change how the facility performs brain surgery, KUTV reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. The iMRI machine allows for intraoperative imaging. Specifically, surgeons at Dixie Regional are using it to take updated images of brain tumors during surgery. Those images allow for more efficient tumor removal.

2. The surgery machine also has outpatient capabilities that can be used in spine surgery.

3. Dixie Regional Medical Center Director of Neurosurgery Jotham Manwaring, MD, said, "This is a suite that allows neurosurgeons or brain surgeons to take a little bit of a different approach to patients and individualize their tumor surgeries."
